The “Walters” family came to Solutions for Change after their teenage daughter convinced her parents to get help before it was too late. Living in a van and scrambling to find food for her siblings while her parents nourished their heroin addiction, she was desperate. “I didn’t want to be an orphan and lose my little brothers to foster care,” she said. “I didn’t want my parents to die.”
But after almost 1,000 hours attending Solutions University, which includes rehabilitation, counseling, parenting classes, and training in life skills, the Walters are ready to move toward independence. Hope for San Diego is helping to rehabilitate a home that will enable their teenage daughter to have a safe, secure, and happy place to live with a healthy family that has broken the cycle of homelessness and addiction.
Solutions for Change is one of several organizations Hope for San Diego supports to address the problem of homelessness in our city. If you’d like to prepare a meal, help with childcare, or donate items to serve those struggling with homelessness, please sign up on our volunteer calendar or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
