Beginning with Ash Wednesday, the ancient Church incorporated 40 days of solemn practices that prepared them for the joy of Easter. In light of the tumultuous events of the last year, from the global pandemic and racial unrest to political turmoil and economic suffering, Hope for San Diego invites you to 40 Days of Service focused on lament and hope for our city.

Please consider joining us in prayer and service, engaging with your city and under-served neighbors as you prepare your own heart for the celebration of Easter. Sign up below for in-person and virtual events.

“We confess that we may be afraid to lament—to passionately express our grief or sorrow. But we also admit our willingness to learn to do it. In lament, we experience our Savior, who was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). You invite us into these spaces of lament because you can handle our pain… We can trust that you will be faithful to heal our pain.”

Danielle Anderson, “Let us Pray: Prayers from Women of Color”

Creating Space for Pain to Breathe

Please join us for an Ash Wednesday virtual event of lament and hope with our church partners.

“We experience Lent with the benefit of hindsight. We know Easter is coming. But the season still gives us time to mourn. Not only a time to mourn, but a time to not be okay with the state of the world and the state of our hearts. A way to change things for the better. We become part of the redemptive work of Jesus. Lent is inviting us to grieve, yes, but also to praise. It asks us to enter into suffering, yes, but also to comfort. It is good for us to remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return.”

Erin Hicks Moon, “Every Broken Thing”
