Ash Wednesday 2023
A Night of Confessions
A collaborative Ash Wednesday event
Confessions Collection—Devotional and Journal
Ash Wednesday is an invitation for us to come to God with our confessions and holy questions. It’s permission to let down the facades we hold to cope, ignore, and distract from the brokenness we see in our city, community, family, and ourselves.
In this suffering, grief, and pain, we see a crucial piece of God’s heart as He meets us in these emotions and calls us back to Himself in restoration through the promise Christ’s resurrection at Easter.
On February 22, you are invited to a collaborative Ash Wednesday event to begin Lent together. Churches, nonprofits, artists, and musicians will join in worship, prayer, and reflection as a community. The Body of Christ in San Diego will display the beauty of unity in diversity as we confess together and receive the ashes that signal our sorrow and repentance.
Kids are welcome—please provide your children’s ages on the RSVP form below so that we can include them in our special program!
About the Event
We often think of Lent as a time to give something up. But what is the purpose? The idea is not to beat ourselves up for our sins or muster up the strength to face temptation. The practice of Lent is to create space for more of Jesus in our lives. We remember our complete dependence on him, walk the road to Calvary with him, and reflect on the ways we turn from him.
Lent is a time to lament, not only our personal sin, but the brokenness of the world around us. We lament in order to acknowledge that everything is not as it was meant to be and cry out to God against the injustices of our world.
As American individualists, our “lament muscles” are weak. Crying out to God in sorrow and pain can be uncomfortable, but in this way, we are reminded that Christ drew all that pain to himself on the Cross.
In the ancient church (back to the 4th century!), Lent was always observed in community, so we invite you to observe Ash Wednesday with the larger Body of Christ in San Diego and practice the 40 days of Lent with your church community.
