Uncommon Friendship

You will be transformed by friendship
The most beautiful friendships are often the most unexpected. Your regular circle of neighbors and friends is probably composed of people similar to you in socio-economic status, education, race, and background. What if you stepped outside of that circle to embrace someone in completely different life circumstances? You might be surprised how God uses such an uncommon friendship to transform your new friend and YOU!
With the tumultuous events of the last year, your friendship is needed more than ever before by people in our city who are struggling. Watch this video to see what a difference a friend makes.

Care Communities — Wrap Around a Foster Family

Through our affiliate, Restoration 225, Hope for San Diego assembles teams of 4-6 people to provide wrap-around support to foster families and kinship families (usually grandmothers caring for their grandchildren). Your role can be prayer, meal prep and delivery, or homework help, but mostly you are a friend to a family with extra needs. Serving with a team means the burden isn’t solely on you.

Walk with Me — Support an Unsheltered Neighbor

Walk alongside a vulnerable man or woman as a friend for one year, providing support and encouragement in their journey toward stable housing. Our affiliate, San Diego Rescue Mission, provides training, ongoing support, and a community of Walk with Me neighbors and friends so that you feel confident in your role.

Good Neighbor Teams — Cheer on a New Refugee Family
Join a team to befriend a newly arriving refugee family for six to 12 months. You will provide tangible care such as an airport welcome, apartment set-up, provision of initial food and clothing, transportation to appointments, school registration, community orientation, English tutoring and job preparation.

One-to-One Tutoring — Boost a Student Academically

Give a boost to a student by coming alongside as a tutor this academic year. Volunteers are not required to have any formal training in education or teaching, but they must speak English fluently and be committed to attending at least one tutoring session per week for the duration of the school year. Opportunities for in-person and online tutoring are available.
